10 ways to keep your house clean

In no particular order, here are 10 ways to keep your house clean by focusing on building habits and routines to serve you well!

10 Ways to Keep Your House Clean

1. Create a landing zone in your entryway

Your entryway is the first space you see when you get home. And after facing the stress of the outside world, the last thing you want to do is walk into clutter and mess when you get home!

Help your entryway function well by creating a landing zone for the all stuff you need and use as you enter and leave your home.

Have specific places for keys, purses and bags, coats, shoes, winter gear, etc. This makes it easy to put things away as soon as you get home, find them when you’re leaving the house and keep your entryway neat and tidy.

2. Deal with paperwork daily

Paperwork can be a big source of clutter for many people. The best way to keep paper clutter from taking over is by staying on top of it so it doesn’t have a chance to get out of control.

First, start by creating a place to collect paperwork so it’s all together. This keeps paper piles from forming all over the house. It also makes it easy to keep track of paperwork and avoid misplacing things.

Decide what will work for you. It might be a basket to collect paperwork on your entryway table, kitchen counter, desk, etc. Or a drawer or hanging file you can easily add paperwork to. The key is keeping paperwork together and contained. While also giving you a limited amount of space for paperwork so you can’t let it build up for long without dealing with it.

Every day, spend a few minutes going through your paperwork. Take action on what needs it, file what needs to be saved and get rid of what you no longer need. Making this a daily habit means paper clutter never has a chance to get out of control or overwhelm you.

3. Do one load of laundry a day

Doing one load of laundry a day has been life-changing for me. It’s helped me stay on top of laundry and avoid feeling overwhelmed or like I can never keep up.

Each load is small, making it simple and easy to keep up with. I’m never faced with piles of laundry to sort, wash, fold and put away.

Start the laundry each morning. Or use your washing machine’s delay start feature to set the loads to finish just before you get home from work. Then make sure you finish the load all the way – including washing, drying, folding/hanging and putting the clothes away.

Knowing you’re always caught up with laundry can reduce the mental load of running a home. And breaks a big job down into little daily tasks that don’t take much time or effort.

4. Run your dishwasher every evening

Another great daily habit to build is running your dishwasher every evening and unloading it first thing every morning.

Using this schedule means you can load dirty dishes straight into the dishwasher throughout the day. And prevent dirty dishes from piling up and becoming a big job to deal with.

5. Don’t put it down, put it away

Another simple habit that can help keep your home tidy is following the “don’t put it down, put it away” rule.

Instead of setting something down after using it to deal with later, put it away as soon as you’re done with it. The more you can get into this habit, the tidier your home will be because mess and clutter won’t pile up on your floors and flat surfaces. You put things away as soon as you’re done using them and don’t have to spend a lot of time tidying up later.

6. Reset your home once a day

Getting in the habit of resetting your home at least once a day is a great way to keep your home clean.

When you have built-in times during the day to tidy and reset your home back to baseline, mess doesn’t have a chance to get out of control or feel overwhelming.

When deciding what will be included in your reset, think about your “must-dos”. What would you need to do to get your home back to the state you like to keep it in?

For example, if you’re doing an evening reset, it could include doing the dishes, folding the laundry, starting the dishwasher, and doing a quick tidy of the whole house. It could also include things like quickly vacuuming a space, making lunches, setting out what you’ll need in the morning, etc.

The key is deciding what “baseline” is for you, and then deciding what you need to do to get your home back to baseline.

Decide when you’ll do your reset and plan to do it at the same time of day consistently. The more consistent you are, the more your resets start to happen automatically, without any extra planning or effort required.

7. Go to bed with a clean kitchen

The kitchen is often the heart of the home. As such, the state of your kitchen can often set the tone for the rest of your house.

Going to bed with a clean kitchen lets you start each day fresh, instead of waking up to yesterday’s mess.

Make an effort to clean the kitchen before the end of each day and notice how it feels to start the next day with a clean and tidy kitchen!

8. Build a consistent cleaning routine

Having a cleaning routine is a great way to keep your home clean on a regular basis. A cleaning routine helps you ensure you keep up with household chores and don’t neglect anything that needs attention.

I like to have a weekly cleaning routine with all the basic household chores I do each week. Then a deep cleaning routine to help me keep up with all the extra chores I do on a less frequent basis.

A cleaning routine helps you stay consistent and on top of household chores. And the best part is, it saves you time and energy because you never have to think about what to do and when. You just follow your cleaning routine and know that things will get done.

9. Have a place for everything

A simple way to reduce clutter and help keep your home tidy and clean is by designating places to keep everything in your home.

When everything has a place, it’s easy to find things when you need them and put them away when you’re done. And fewer items get left out of floors and flat surfaces, floating around your home causing clutter and mess.

If an item doesn’t have a home, make one! If you can’t find a spot for it, do some decluttering until you create a spot to keep it.

10. Decluttering regularly

Having a good decluttering habit is a great way to keep your home clean and tidy. Get rid of clutter so it can’t contribute to mess in your house. Making it easier to keep your home tidy and helping your home stay tidier more often.

Always keep an eye out for anything you don’t use, need or love, then get rid of it instead of letting it stay in your home. Each piece of clutter you get rid of makes your home a little easier to manage and keep clean.

10 ways to keep your house clean

I hope these 10 ways to keep your house clean will help you keep your home tidier with more ease.

Often, it’s a matter of building small habits that end up making the biggest difference. The habits in today’s post are all great ways to start if you want to keep your home cleaner and tidier, more often!

Hello! One tip that really resonates with me is cleaning up the kitchen after dinner so that the next morning I don't see dirty dishes- dishes are my least favorite chore! I taught this to my children growing up; I think I may have passed on "I hate dishes"; though I recently had a dirty pan that one of my grown sons offered to clean for me, without me even asking!

I think it makes such a difference too. Waking up to a clean kitchen is always so nice. How nice of your son to do the dishes! That's great! Thanks for reading :)
