1. Give everything a home

One of the best ways to keep your home tidy and clutter-free is ensuring everything in your home has a designated place to keep it.

Items without homes tend to float around the house on surfaces and floors causing mess and clutter.

But when every item in your home has a designated place to keep it, it’s easier to put things away. Not only helping to reduce mess and clutter. But also making it easier to find things the next time you need them. Helping you avoid wasting time and energy searching for lost items.

If there are items in your home that don’t have designated places to keep them, make it a point to give them a home. You might have to do some decluttering to find homes for everything. The key is keeping what you use, need and love and giving those items homes by getting rid of what you don’t use, need or love to make space.

2. Don’t put it down, put it away

Once everything in your home has a designated place to keep it, the next step is getting in the habit of putting things away in their homes as soon as you’re done using them.

Rather than putting items down to pick up or deal with later, get in the habit of putting them away now. Remind yourself “don’t put it down, put it away”.

Making this a habit really helps keep your home tidier, clutter-free and easier to manage.

It might not seem like a big deal to leave something sitting on the counter instead of putting it away. But when you do this with multiple items throughout the day, you can be left with a lot of picking up and tidying that needs to be done.

Each individual task may only take a few seconds, but it can start to feel overwhelming when these little tasks pile up and you have things all over the house that need to be picked up and put away.

The good news is, when everything has a clear home or designated place to keep it, picking up and putting things away after you’re done using them is a lot easier. Help yourself follow through the with “don’t put it down, put it away” rule by having clear, easy-to-access and specific homes for every item you own.

3. If it takes less than one minute, do it now

And finally, the last daily habit that can really help keep your home tidy and clutter-free is following the “one-minute rule”.

If a task takes less than one minute to complete, do it now rather than leaving it to do later.

Again, each individual task on its own may not seem like a big deal. But when you have a bunch of little tasks that need to be done all piling up, it can start to feel overwhelming. Stop procrastinating and take action right away. Your future self will thank you!

For example, when you’re done doing your hair or makeup in the morning, put your blow dryer, hair products and makeup away before you leave the bathroom. It will only take a few seconds but will leave your bathroom clean and tidy rather than messy or cluttered.

While you're at it and the bathroom counter is clear, give it a quick wipe. It will only take a few seconds, but it'll mean your bathroom counter and sink always stay clean. Making your bathroom more pleasant to use and deep cleaning will be a lot easier.

When you’re finished eating, wash your dishes or load them into the dishwasher right away. It only takes a few minutes but means you’ll avoid a stack of dirty dishes on your counter at the end of the day.

If you try something on but decide not to wear it, hang it or fold it up right then instead of draping it on your bed to deal with later. You might not feel like dealing with it now, but you definitely won’t feel more like dealing with it later. Take care of this little task now so you don’t have to worry about catching up with a bunch of little tasks later!
