Decluttering list: 100+ things to get rid of today!
Bathroom decluttering list
The bathroom is a great place to start decluttering. Not only are bathrooms usually smaller rooms, where you can make progress and see the results of your decluttering efforts quicker.
But bathrooms aren’t usually places where you keep your most special, sentimental items. That means the decluttering decisions are easier because they’re more logical and less emotional.
Here is a list of things to declutter from the bathroom:
- Dried up nail polish
- Nail polish you haven’t worn in the last year
- Empty or almost empty makeup and personal care items (i.e. lotion, face wash, mascara tubes, eye shadow, etc.)
- Makeup you don’t like or never use
- Old makeup (makeup has a limited shelf life before it becomes unsafe or unsuitable for use)
- Old perfume or perfume you never wear
- Samples or hotel toiletries
- Any duplicate items, such as extra hairbrushes, hair tools, tweezers, nail clippers, makeup brushes, etc.
- Expired or no longer needed medications (take them to your local pharmacy for proper disposal)

- Stained, ripped or worn out towels (animal shelters are great places to donate old towels)

Kid stuff decluttering list
There’s no doubt that kids seem to generate a lot of clutter! But it doesn’t have to take over the house!
Get your kids on board with helping you declutter whenever possible. It’s usually not a good idea to get rid of stuff that belongs to your kids without their input and consent. It can often end up leaving them feeling violated and make them hold onto stuff even tighter.
However, most younger kids have limited attention spans and limited decision-making abilities when it comes to decluttering. It can be helpful to do a quick decluttering sweep through their things, removing the garbage and obvious clutter first, so they can use their attention and decision-making abilities for the more important decisions.
It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it!
Including your kids when decluttering is not always easy, and can be frustrating when they want to keep more or different things than you would prefer.
But by including them you’re helping teach them valuable life skills. Helping them learn the value of simplifying, and giving them more control over their belongings and the care they require.
If your kids are resistant to letting go of anything, try giving them space limits for each category of their stuff and allowing them to keep only what they can fit in that space to encourage them to declutter.
Or encourage them to pick out their favourite things they want to keep. Sometimes simply shifting the focus from what they’re getting rid of to what they’re choosing to keep instead can make a big difference!
It’s also important to teach them to be responsible for cleaning up and taking care of their stuff. Remind them that the less they have, the easier it is to take care of it, and the more they have the more work it is to manage it all.
Here’s a list of easy kid stuff to declutter:
- Finished colouring books
- Broken crayons
- Dried up markers and glue
- Broken toys or toys with missing pieces
- Toys you can’t stand and drive you crazy!
- Any toys no one plays with or likes
- Toys that are no longer age-appropriate
- Damaged books
- Artwork and schoolwork (Keep a physical or digital copy of the pieces they’re most proud of. Display their work you’re not keeping, then recycle it after a few days. Remind them the fun of art is most often in the process of creating it!)
- Books that are no longer age-appropriate
- Puzzles with missing pieces
Linen closet decluttering list
The linen closet is another great place to get started decluttering. Again, it’s a small space, so you’ll be able to see and enjoy the results of your efforts right away!
If you’re getting rid of old, worn out or stained linens, animal shelters are great places to donate them.
Here are some things to declutter from your linen closet:
- Any linens that are worn out, stained or ripped
- Sheets sets you never use or don’t like
- Extra pillows, linens or blankets you haven’t used in the last 1-2 years
- Blankets you don’t like
- Stained or old pillows
- Extra towels you never use
Electronics decluttering list
Old electronics are things that are easy to hold onto “just in case”. But more often than not are never needed or used and end up as clutter. Take a few minutes to sort through any old electronics you have and get rid of the clutter.
Here are some ideas of electronics to get rid of:
- Old computers and laptops (copy any important data to your current computer, hard drive or cloud storage, then be sure to remove the hard drive and any sensitive information before getting rid of old computers)
- Old devices you’ve upgraded
- Cords you don’t use (or even know what they’re for!)
Books decluttering list
When you’re decluttering books your local library is a great place to donate any you’re getting rid of.
Then, if you’re struggling to let go of certain books, remind yourself that if you ever want to read or reread them in the future, you can simply borrow the book back from the library!
Here are some ideas to get you started decluttering your books:
- Books you’ve owned for 2 or more years and haven’t read yet
- Books you’ve read but won’t reread
- Old textbooks
- Cookbooks you never use
- Books you started and never finished
- Children’s books that are no longer age-appropriate
Miscellaneous decluttering list
These miscellaneous items are great to get rid of when you’re decluttering to build your momentum and motivation. Most of them are easy to let go of and give you an easy place to start decluttering and start making progress.
Here are plenty of other things to declutter to keep your decluttering progress going:
