Decluttering Motivation: How to Refresh Your Home for a Minimalist Summer

Today’s post is all about finding the decluttering motivation you’re looking for to set yourself up for a simpler summer!

Summer is a season of lightness, warmth, and relaxation. But if your home feels cluttered and overwhelming, it can be hard to enjoy the easygoing vibe of the season. The good news? Decluttering your home now can set you up for a stress-free, minimalist summer.

If you’ve been feeling unmotivated or unsure of where to start, today’s post will help you find the decluttering motivation to refresh your space and create a home that feels open, airy, and peaceful.

By the time summer is in full swing, you’ll have a clutter-free home you love and that gives you more time to enjoy the season.

Why declutter for summer?

Decluttering isn’t just about getting rid of things – it’s about creating space for what matters most to you. Giving you the time, space and freedom to enjoy the summer and focus on what matters most to you.

Here are a few examples of why decluttering now to prepare for summer can be so beneficial:

  • More time for fun: A clutter-free home means less cleaning and organizing, giving you more time for summer activities.
  • A lighter, airier home: Less stuff makes your home feel fresh and open, perfect for warm summer days.
  • Easier entertaining: If you love hosting guests, a decluttered space makes it easier to welcome friends and family without stress.
  • A stress-free start to the season: Getting rid of visual clutter in your home reduces stress and helps you feel more relaxed in your home.
  • Better seasonal transitions: By clearing out winter-related items, you make room for summer essentials like beach gear, outdoor furniture and summer clothing.

How to find decluttering motivation

If decluttering feels overwhelming or like you don’t know where to start, you’re not alone! But there are definitely things you can do to make decluttering feel more manageable and find your decluttering motivation to get started and make progress.

Here’s how:

Visualize your ideal summer home

Close your eyes and picture how you want your home to feel this summer.

Do you see an open, airy living room? A clutter-free patio perfect for morning coffee? A streamlined wardrobe of only your favourite summer outfits?

The clearer your vision is for how you want your home to look, feel and function after decluttering, the better. Keeping this vision in the forefront of your mind will help you stay motivated as you declutter.

Set a clear goal

Instead of saying, “I need to declutter my entire house,” break it down into smaller, achievable goals. Start small so you don’t get overwhelmed, decluttering one drawer, one shelf, one cupboard, or one pile at a time.

Then, make a plan for how you want to approach decluttering. The best way to find decluttering motivation is having a clear plan you can follow and holding yourself accountable to it.

For example:

  • Declutter one room per week
  • Donate 10 items per day for a month
  • Clear out all non-essential décor to make your home feel more open and relaxed.

Whatever your plan is, keep it specific and manageable so you can follow through and get the decluttering done.

Use a timer

One of my favourite ways to find the motivation to tackle a task you’re not excited about is using a timer. Set a timer for 15-30 minutes and declutter as much as you can in that time.

Once the timer finishes, give yourself permission to stop. This prevents burnout and helps you stay focused on decluttering.

Take a different approach to decluttering

Decide how you want to approach decluttering. Some people like to work room-by-room to focus their efforts and see progress with each room you complete.

But don’t be afraid to try another approach and see how it works for you.

Sometimes, decluttering by category (clothes, books, kitchen items, etc.) is more effective for some people than tackling one room at a time. For example, gathering all of your summer clothes into one place helps you see what you truly have and what you can let go of.

Make it fun

If you’re low on motivation to declutter, do what you can to make the experience more enjoyable.

For example, put on your favourite playlist or a motivating podcast. Turn it into a game – challenge yourself to fill a donation box in 15 minutes. Involve your family and make decluttering a group effort.

Do what you can to make decluttering more fun and it’ll be easier to find the motivation to get it done.

Reward yourself

One the best ways to stay motivated is to celebrate the progress you’re making!

Treat yourself (to something that won’t add clutter to your home) to celebrate the hard work you’re doing decluttering. For example, treat yourself to an iced coffee, a beach day or a movie night when you hit a decluttering milestone.

Decluttering checklist: How to refresh your home for summer

Now that you have some decluttering motivation, it’s time to declutter!

Here are some ideas of things to declutter as we head into the summer months that will have a significant impact on your home and life. Focus on the areas that will have the biggest impact on your summer lifestyle.

Declutter seasonal clothing

  • Pack away bulky winter coats, scarves, gloves, and boots.
  • Donate any winter clothing or accessories that no longer fit or that you didn’t use this winter.
  • Donate summer clothes that no longer fit or don’t make you feel great.
  • Keep only the essentials – comfortable, breathable outfits you love wearing.

Refresh your living spaces

  • Target surface clutter and visual clutter by clearing off surfaces like coffee tables and countertops.
  • Store or donate excess throw blankets and pillows.
  • Swap dark or heavy décor for lighter, summery pieces (or embrace minimal décor and give your spaces some breathing room!).

Simplify the kitchen and dining area

  • Get rid of expired pantry items and unused spices.
  • Donate extra mugs, plates, and kitchen gadgets you don’t use.
  • Make space for summer essentials like picnic supplies or outdoor dining items.

Lighten up the bedroom

  • Pack away heavy bedding and switch to lightweight sheets.
  • Remove clutter from nightstands and dressers.
  • Keep only the books and items you truly love in your space.

Declutter kids’ items and outdoor gear

  • Donate outgrown summer clothes and shoes.
  • Toss any broken outdoor toys and sporting equipment.
  • Organize a small selection of summer activities (chalk, pool floats, beach toys, etc.) and donate the excess items.

Clear out the entryway and garage

  • Store or donate winter gear.
  • Make space for summer essentials like sandals, hats, and sunscreen.
  • Declutter your car – remove trash, winter supplies, and anything you don’t need.

How to maintain a clutter-free home this summer

Decluttering is the first step. After all that hard work, you’ll want to keep your home feeling light and clutter-free all season long.

Here are a few strategies to help you maintain your clutter-free spaces:

  • Adopt the “one in, one out” rule: If you bring in a new item, donate or remove something else in its place.
  • Do a weekly decluttering sweep: Spend 15 minutes each week putting things back where they belong and removing any unnecessary clutter.
  • Create drop zones: Create designated places for all of your summer essentials (like sunglasses, sunscreen, beach towels, etc.) so they don’t end up scattered everywhere and you can find them when you need them!
  • Be intentional with new purchases: After decluttering, make it your goal to bring less stuff into your home. Before buying something new, ask yourself: Do I truly need this? Will it add value to my life? Do I have somewhere to keep it so it won’t cause clutter?

Decluttering motivation

A clutter-free home isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s about creating a space that feels peaceful, inviting and easy to maintain.

If you’re struggling to find the motivation to declutter, remind yourself of the benefits of a clutter-free home. Remember that by taking the time to declutter now, you’ll set yourself up for a home you can enjoy, relax in and find more simplicity.

Start with just one area today, and watch the decluttering motivation build with each decluttering task you complete.
