1. Plan your day

Planning your day before it starts is a simple way to be more organized. You can plan your day the night before, or do it first thing in the morning. But having a plan for your day is a great way to be more organized, focused and productive.

Start each day with a clear plan. It could be a to-do list, a detailed schedule or a simple outline of what you want to accomplish. Knowing what needs to be done and in what order will help you stay organized, on task and productive.

You can use tools like a paper planner, notebook, digital calendar or apps like Trello or Asana to map out and plan your day. Don’t be afraid to try different options until you find the one that works best for you.

2. Make your bed

One of the simplest, yet most effective habits of organized people is making your bed each morning.

This small act of tidying sets a positive tone for the day, giving you a sense of accomplishment right from the start. It also keeps your bedroom looking neat and welcoming, which can inspire you to continue working to make the rest of your home and office look the same. Plus, it’s always nice at the end of a long day to have a neatly made bed to climb into!

3. Don’t put it down, put it away

Another habit that’s simple, but highly effective at preventing mess and clutter is getting in the habit of not putting things down to deal with later. But instead putting them away as soon as you’re done using them.

When you can get in the habit of “don’t put it down, put it away”, it can help keep your home tidier and make it easier to find things when you need them.

4. Declutter regularly

Physical clutter not only clutters your home and makes your home more difficult to manage and take care of. It can also lead to mental clutter as well. As the more you own the more you need to think about, keep track of, take care of, look for, organize, remember, etc.

Make it a habit to declutter regularly. Set aside time each week to declutter and organize somewhere in your workspace, home or digital life. Donate or discard items you no longer need and only keep what adds value to your life.

5. Give everything a home

One of my favourite ways to feel more organized is by giving every item you own a home or designated place to keep it.

Clutter and mess are often the result of items that don’t have a home, so they get left out, floating around on surfaces and floors causing mess and clutter.

When every item has a specific home, it’s easier to tidy up and put things away where they belong. As well as find items again the next time you need them. All while preventing clutter and mess and helping your home be more organized.

Thoroughly declutter your home first. Then find specific homes to keep everything you’re choosing to keep. Make sure each item’s home is logical and easy to access. Sometimes you need to declutter even more to make sure every item has a space that’s easy to access.

6. Label everything

Another great way to get organized and stay that way is by using labels. Once items have a home, or designated place to keep them, label them. Clear labels make it easy to remember what goes where. And make it easy for other people in your home to find things and put them away.

You can use broad or specific categories and labels, whatever works best for you. For example, you might have a bin labelled “cleaning supplies” to contain all of your cleaning supplies. Or have a separate bin labelled “bathroom cleaning supplies”, “kitchen cleaning supplies”, “carpet cleaning supplies”, etc.

7. Use the “one-minute” rule

Another simple rule to help you be more organized is the one-minute rule. If a task can be completed in one minute or less, do it immediately rather than putting it off for later.

This rule helps prevent small tasks from piling up and becoming overwhelming.

Whether it’s replying to an email, filing a document or putting an item away, handling quick tasks right away is a great way to stay organized and simplify your life.

8. Write things down

A simple way to reduce mental clutter is by writing things down. Whether it’s in a planner, in a notebook or in a digital app, write down things you need to remember. Write down as much as you can like important dates, to-do lists, reminders, future tasks, etc.

Writing them down means you can get them out of your head and stop relying on your memory alone. Creating space in your mind, rather than mentally keeping track of a lot of information and reminders.

9. Follow the “one in, one out” rule

A great way to help keep your home simplified and organized is using the “one in, one out” rule.

Whenever you bring something new into your home, find something to declutter in its place. For example, if you buy a new pair of jeans, find an old pair to let go to create space for the new.

The more consistent you can be with the one in, one out rule, the less decluttering you’ll need to do later. And the tidier and more organized your home will stay!

10. Clean your kitchen every night

Cleaning your kitchen every night is a great habit to build to feel more organized and on top of your life at home.

The kitchen is often the heart of the home and can set the tone for the rest of your home. When the kitchen is clean and tidy, life at home often feels more in control and organized.

Plus, it’s so nice to wake up to a clean kitchen to start the day rather than starting your day dealing with yesterday’s mess.

Spend a few minutes each evening washing the dishes, starting the dishwasher, wiping the counters and sink, clearing off any piles or items that need to be put away, etc. Then notice how you feel the next day walking into a clean and tidy kitchen!
