What is a capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a thoughtfully curated collection of clothing made up of versatile, high-quality pieces you love to wear. The idea is to focus on quality over quantity, eliminating excess and keeping only the items that truly fit your lifestyle, style preferences, and body.

A classic capsule wardrobe often includes around 30-40 pieces per season (including tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, and shoes, but excluding underwear, workout wear, and accessories).

But you can choose to have whatever number of items in your capsule wardrobe that makes sense for you. You can use other people’s suggestions as guidelines, but ultimately, you can create whatever kind of capsule wardrobe works best for you!

The goal is to create a collection where every item works well with the others, making it easy to mix and match outfits with minimal effort. Giving you lots of outfit options without needing a huge collection of clothes.

Why build a minimalist wardrobe?

Simplifying your closet can have a surprisingly positive impact on your life. In fact, simplifying my wardrobe has been one of my favourite decluttering projects to date. I didn’t realize how positively a simplified wardrobe could impact my life until I tried it. It’s like a weight is lifted from your life when you let go of the clothes you don’t wear, need or love.

Here are some examples of how a minimalist wardrobe can benefit your life:

  • Less decision fatigue: Fewer choices mean faster, easier outfit decisions.
  • Saves time and money: No more impulse buys or endless shopping trips. Plus, deciding what to wear each day is faster and easier.
  • Reduces clutter: Your closet becomes a peaceful, organized space when you have fewer clothes and only keep what you wear and love.
  • Increases confidence: You’re left with only the clothes that fit, flatter, and make you feel your best.
  • More intentional living: A capsule wardrobe supports mindful consumption.

Step-by-step: How to build a capsule wardrobe

1. Define your lifestyle and style

Start by getting clear on two things: your daily lifestyle and your personal style.

Think about what you do every day. Are you at home with kids? Working in an office? A mix of both? Something else entirely?

Then, consider your style preferences. Are you drawn to classic pieces, casual comfort, or maybe a minimalist chic look?

Clearly understanding your personal style and daily lifestyle will help you choose clothes that not only look great but actually work for your life.

Tip: Create a Pinterest board or save Instagram posts that reflect outfits you love. Then look for patterns in color, shapes, style, fabrics, fit, etc.

2. Declutter your current wardrobe

Before you add anything new, you need to let go of what’s no longer serving you.

Pull everything out of your closet and drawers. It’s important to see everything you own all together to fully understand what you own and how much you own.

Go through your current wardrobe piece by piece and ask yourself:

  • Do I wear this regularly?
  • Does it fit me well and make me feel good?
  • Is it in good condition?
  • Does it suit my current lifestyle?

If the answer is no, it’s time to let it go. Either donate, sell or recycle.

And remember, you’re not getting rid of everything. You’re curating a wardrobe that supports you, not stresses you out.

3. Choose your capsule wardrobe basics

A capsule wardrobe is built around versatile, timeless staples that can be styled in multiple ways. Everyone’s capsule wardrobe will be different because your ideal pieces will depend on your preferences and lifestyle. But here are some common basics to consider including as the foundation of your capsule wardrobe:

Tops:

  • 3-5 basic t-shirts or blouses
  • 2-3 long-sleeved tops or lightweight sweaters
  • 1-2 dressy tops for special occasions

Bottoms:

  • 1-2 pairs of jeans (blue, black or white)
  • 1 pair of trousers or leggings
  • 1-2 skirts or shorts, depending on the season

Layers:

  • 1 cardigan or blazer
  • 1 jacket or coat (weather appropriate)
  • 1 cozy sweater or pullover

Dresses:

  • 1-2 dresses that can be dressed up or down

Shoes:

  • 1 pair of casual sneakers or flats
  • 1 pair of boots or sandals
  • 1 pair of dressier shoes

Accessories (optional):

  • Neutral scarf
  • Everyday bag or tote
  • Simple jewelry that coordinates with your wardrobe

Pro tip: Stick to a cohesive color palette, usually 3-4 main colors, including 1-2 neutrals and 1-2 accent colors, to make mixing and matching easier.

4. Focus on fit, fabric and function

Once you’ve narrowed down your wardrobe to the essentials, it’s time to make sure those pieces truly work for you.

Think about the fit, fabric and function of each piece you’re choosing to keep:

  • Fit: Choose pieces that flatter your body and feel good to wear.
  • Fabric: Look for comfortable, breathable fabrics that hold up well over time.
  • Function: Make sure each piece fits your real, everyday life, not just your fantasy version of your life.

Creating a minimalist wardrobe is not about perfection. It’s about choosing fewer, better pieces to simplify your life.

5. Fill in any gaps (mindfully)

After decluttering and assessing what you already own, you may find a few gaps in your wardrobe. Maybe you need a good pair of jeans, some basic t-shirts or a warm coat.

Make a short list of intentional purchases, but don’t rush out to buy everything at once. Take your time and choose quality over quantity.

Budget tip: Check second-hand shops or online resale platforms for sustainable, affordable options.

6. Maintain your capsule wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe isn’t one and done. It evolves with you. Because of this, it does require some maintenance.

Each season, do a quick refresh. Swap out seasonal items, such as summer dresses, for sweaters. I prefer keeping only in-season clothes in my current capsule wardrobe to simplify decision-making even more. You can store out-of-season clothes in a less accessible place in your closet or in another space, keeping your current capsule wardrobe front and center.

Also, take some time to reassess what’s working and what’s not. Don’t be afraid to let go of items that aren’t working as well as you hoped they would. Replace any items that are worn out if needed.

Over time, you’ll get better at knowing what you love to wear, and your capsule wardrobe will become second nature.

Less really is more

A minimalist wardrobe isn’t about deprivation. It’s about freedom. Freedom from decision fatigue. Freedom from clutter. And freedom to feel more like yourself in what you wear every day.

When you focus on keeping only what you love and need, you’ll discover that less clothing really can lead to more confidence, clarity, and ease.

So, take a deep breath, open your closet, and start building a wardrobe that reflects your values, your lifestyle, and your beautiful, simple life.
