When your kitchen is cluttered, messy or chaotic feeling, it can make your time spent in the kitchen feel stressful and frustrating.
But when you have a tidy, clutter-free and peaceful kitchen, you will likely enjoy your time in the kitchen more. Not to mention it’ll be easier to cook, clean up and use your kitchen.
Today you’ll learn 5 ways to create a more peaceful kitchen. All so you can start transforming your kitchen into a space that works for you and you enjoy spending time in.
Let’s get to it! Here are 5 ways to create a clutter-free and more peaceful kitchen:

5 ways to create a peaceful kitchen
1. Clear the flat surfaces
Flat surfaces can quickly and easily become magnets for clutter. And the kitchen has a lot of flat surfaces, meaning a lot of clutter can pile up! Plus, clutter always seems to attract more clutter. So often, what starts as a small pile of stuff, quickly attracts more stuff and turns into a big pile of clutter!
Flat surfaces make it easy to set things down to deal with later, causing clutter and mess. Not only that but that clutter and mess cause visual clutter as well. Making your kitchen look messier, more chaotic and more overwhelming.
That clutter also gets in the way as you’re trying to use your kitchen. Making it more difficult to cook, clean up and eat in your kitchen.
Removing clutter from the flat surfaces of your kitchen helps your kitchen look, feel and function better.
Start with your countertops, removing anything that doesn’t belong on them. Once you’ve removed and gotten rid of or put away those items, look at what’s left. Really assess if you need to keep everything on your countertops, or if you can simplify them.
Remember, clutter can attract more clutter. So the more stuff you keep on your counters to begin with, the more clutter it might attract. Try keeping some items in your cabinets or drawers instead of on your countertops and see how you like it. It might make your kitchen easier to use and clean up. Don’t be afraid to declutter your cabinets and drawers to create space for items usually kept on your counters.
2. Create a dishwasher routine
A dishwasher is a great tool to help keep your kitchen tidy and make life easier. The key to getting the most out of your dishwasher is having a routine to help make sure it’s working hard for you.
I like to run our dishwasher every evening. Then unload it first thing in the morning so I can load dirty dishes into it throughout the day. This is a great way to prevent dirty dishes from piling up in the sink throughout the day. Which can be really overwhelming and make your kitchen look messy and chaotic.
Figure out times when you can consistently run and unload the dishwasher so it’s available to fill with dirty dishes throughout the day.
3. Designate a place for paperwork
Paperwork can quickly become a big source of clutter, and it often ends up in the kitchen. (Again, those flat surfaces are magnets for paper clutter!)
The best way to avoid paper clutter taking over is first having a designated place to collect it. Then second, getting in the habit of dealing with it daily so it doesn’t get out of control.
Having a designated place to collect paperwork keeps it contained and all together. Helping you avoid random paper piles all over the kitchen. And making it easier to keep track of paperwork and avoid losing it or forgetting about it.
A basket for papers on your counter is an easy solution. So is a hanging file in the pantry, inside a cabinet or on the wall. Figure out what will work best for you. Don’t be afraid to try different solutions until you find what works for you and your family.
Once you have a place to collect paperwork, get in the habit of dealing with paperwork daily. Designate a time every day when you can quickly go through your paper collector and deal with paperwork. Take action on things that need it (bills to pay, invitations to RSVP to, forms to sign, etc.). Then file anything that needs to be saved and recycle what you don’t need.
If you deal with paperwork daily, it’ll only take a few minutes, things won’t get forgotten or missed and paper clutter won’t have a chance to pile up.
4. Declutter ruthlessly
One key to having a peaceful kitchen is making sure it’s not bursting at the seams with stuff. Declutter your cabinets, drawers and shelves ruthlessly so you only have what you use, need and love.
Get rid of duplicate items or items you rarely use. Keep it simple so your cabinets aren’t overfull and you can easily find things and put things away.
It’s a lot easier to keep your kitchen tidy when it’s easy to put things away. Make sure every item in your kitchen has a place to keep it. Then declutter ruthlessly so it’s easy to find things and put them away.

5. Clean as you go
And finally, a simple habit to build to help keep your kitchen tidy and easy to maintain is cleaning as you go. As you’re cooking, clean up as you go. Load dirty dishes and tools in the dishwasher as soon as you’re done with them. Have a sink of hot, soapy water to wash items as you use them. Wipe up any spills as soon as they happen.
Cleaning as you go means you won’t be left with a big mess when you finish cooking or baking. Making clean up easier and saving you time. Not to mention helping your kitchen feel more peaceful as well!
