The Power of the Nightly Reset: A Key to Maintaining a Tidy & Clutter-Free Home

Today’s post is all about the power of the nightly reset to keep your home tidy and clutter-free. This simple habit can completely change how you manage your home. And how your home looks, feels and functions on a regular basis.

The power of the nightly reset

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, maintaining a clean and organized home can often feel like an overwhelming task.

But what if I told you there’s a simple, yet highly effective way to keep your home consistently neat without the stress? The answer lies in the concept of “resetting” your home each night.

Creating a nightly reset routine at the end of each day can be a game-changer in maintaining a clutter-free environment.

This practice involves taking a few minutes to tidy up and restore order, setting the stage for a fresh start the next day. Not only does it make your home look tidier, but it also contributes to a peaceful and stress-free environment.

Let’s explore how this simple habit can work wonders and transform your home and life.

What is a nightly reset?

A nightly reset routine is simply taking a few minutes at the end of each day to put your home back in order. You’re putting it back to baseline, or back to how you usually like your home to look, feel and function on a regular basis.

You’re not doing deep cleaning or serious decluttering. It’s simply putting your home back to the state you ideally would like to keep it in.

Because of this, your nightly resets shouldn’t take too long. And the best part is they get faster and easier the more consistently you do the reset!

Examples of what your nightly reset routine might include

Your nightly reset will be customized to suit your family, your home, your preferences, your lifestyle, etc. But in general, here are a few examples of things that are great to include in your nightly reset:

1. Tidy each room

The most important part of a nightly reset is quickly tidying each space in your home and putting things away where they belong.

Pick up any items left out and return them to their designated places. Clear off any items left out on the flat surfaces like countertops, tables and desks in your spaces or on the floor. Throw out any garbage you come across. And if you come across any unnecessary clutter, add it to your donation box to get it out of your house.

Then generally straighten and tidy the room to put it back to baseline. For example, straighten pillows, fold blankets, make sure the space looks tidy, etc. This quick pass through each room helps maintain order without much extra effort.

2. Clean the kitchen

Take some time to tidy and reset your kitchen. Wash the dishes, wipe the counters, start the dishwasher and clear any piles that have accumulated on the counters or table.

3. Quickly clean floors

Doing a quick vacuum or sweep of the floors in any high-use areas is a great way to keep mess from accumulating and make your home stay cleaner more often.

You can even plan to sweep or vacuum a different room each night to stay on top of multiple rooms.

4. Put laundry away

If you’re in the habit of doing a load of laundry a day (another great habit to simplify your life!), fold, hang and put away any laundry you did during the day.

Doing small loads more frequently is a great way to prevent laundry from getting overwhelming and make it easier to keep up with.

5. Get ready for the next morning

While you’re doing your nightly reset, it’s also a great time to get anything you’ll need ready for the coming morning and day.

Doing things like making lunches, packing backpacks or getting a head start on breakfast can go a long way to simplify your morning the next day.

The benefits of a nightly reset

Stress reduction

A cluttered environment can lead to increased stress and anxiety. By resetting your home each night, you eliminate the chaos and create a more calming atmosphere.

Giving yourself a fresh start each day means you can start the day without having to deal with yesterday’s mess. And aren’t already starting the day with extra tasks needing to be done and an undone to-do list before the day has even gotten started!

Set the tone for the day

Waking up to an organized space sets a positive tone for the day, making it easier to focus and accomplish tasks without distractions.

Consistent maintenance

Regular resets help prevent clutter from accumulating. Instead of spending hours on a major cleaning session, a nightly reset keeps the mess in check, making the overall maintenance easier and more manageable.

And when you stay on top of tidying and keeping up with these small tasks, messes don’t have a chance to accumulate and become overwhelming later on.

Prevents you from constantly cleaning

It’s easy to feel like you’re always cleaning at home. Like you constantly should be picking up, cleaning up, etc.

The beauty of a nightly reset is that it gives you a designated time to pick up and tidy your home. You can stop cleaning constantly, knowing you’ll tackle it during your nightly reset. Having this habit and routine helps you know it will get done and gives you permission to relax in the meantime.

Tips to help make your nightly reset routine successful

You can do some things to help make your nightly reset routine more successful.

Make it a habit

The more consistently you keep up with your nightly resets, the more it becomes a habit. Getting it done becomes second nature or something you do almost automatically.

When you build a strong habit, and consistently do these nightly resets, your home stays tidier more often because mess and clutter don’t have a chance to pile up. Then, your nightly resets become faster and easier because your home stays tidier in general. It’s a win-win!

Think of these nightly resets as a favour to your future self. If you don’t feel like doing it now, you’ll likely not feel like doing it anymore in the morning either. Instead, do yourself a favour and get it done so you can start each day with a fresh start, not yesterday’s mess!

Make it enjoyable

A great way to build the habit is by making it enjoyable to do your nightly resets. Listen to music, your favourite podcast or an audiobook while you work. Making it feel like less of a chore and more enjoyable!

Include your family

Involve your family so you can work as a team on your nightly resets. There’s no reason to try and do it all yourself. Share the work and make your nightly resets even faster and easier.

Reward yourself

Another way to make your nightly resets a little more enjoyable is by rewarding yourself when you’re done.

Do something special for yourself after finishing to treat yourself. You could light a favourite candle, make a cup of your favourite tea, go for a walk, have a little treat, watch a show you love, etc. Do what feels nice to you to reward yourself for getting it done!

Keep decluttering

The less stuff you have in your home, the less you’ll need to pick up and deal with each day. When you declutter ruthlessly there will be less to manage, organize, pick up and put away each night. Keep decluttering so your nightly resets can become faster and easier to keep up with.

Have homes for everything

As you’re decluttering and doing your nightly resets, make sure everything you keep has a specific place to keep it. This makes it easier to put things away during your nightly resets, so they can become faster and easier.

The power of the nightly reset

Incorporating a nightly reset into your routine can be a transformative step toward maintaining a tidy and clutter-free home.

By dedicating a small amount of time each night to organize and reset your home, you set yourself up for a stress-free and productive day ahead.

Remember, it’s not about perfection but about aiming to become consistent. Start small, stay consistent, and witness the significant impact this simple habit can have on your daily life.

I’d love to know…do you do nightly resets? If not, has this post convinced you to give it a try? Leave a comment and let me know!

I routinely clear the dishes and lock doors for the night. I like the idea of a mindful reset to give yourself a fresh start for the following day. This does indeed go hand in hand with a decluttered home. I have let that slip. I plan on giving this great focus in the new year. Thank you. I enjoy your weekly blogs. They keep me on track.
